Text Box: Come to Market of Choice, pick up your lunch at the deli, and join us upstairs as we learn about how homeless children in Corvallis are being helped.

Did you know that until the 1980's, there were no homeless families in Oregon, just homeless individual adults?  Since then, there has been a rise in homeless families.  Now there are about 200 children considered to be "homeless" here in Corvallis. Carolyn helps these children go to school and to have their basic needs met.  She says because of all the economic policies over these past decades, we're becoming a culture of renters. People are losing their homes, and when the homeless go to relatives' homes to live, the landlords evict them after a week or two.  Some live in substandard housing, which is considered homeless under the definition she works under, since these homes often don't have adequate plumbing, heat, etc.  Living on somebody's couch is considered homeless, as is going from friend to relative to friend, or living in your car.  This is an ever-increasing problem in Corvallis. Carolyn will tell us about the challenges and the success stories. The Gazette-Times ran a story on this issue on Sunday, December 19, 2010.
